Why Teach Art to Children?

Around 32,000 years ago, the first type of expression other than vocalization was developed by early humans. This expression was not communicated in the form of mathematics or written language, but in the form of painting.  Yes, art was the first crucial component in the evolution of human education.

Common knowledge in educational circles, arts education provides clear benefits to a child’s development such as:

– Critical Thinking Skills

– Social Skills

– Problem Solving Skills

– Improvement in the way a child analyzes and views his/her environment

A surprising fact to most parents is that an arts education has been shown to improve the performance levels in other academic subjects and standardized tests. In other words, learning an art can improve the overall education performance of a child!  Our species began expression using art, and art continues to be a major form of communication today (just think of the use of images in advertising, television, films etc).

The benefits of an arts education are clearly great, but a parent should seek to educate their child in the arts to, more than anything else, celebrate what makes us human and what makes us civilized. While crucial academic studies such as mathematics, sciences, and language teach us how to live, the arts teach us why we live, and as a result, the arts are just as much a part of a well-rounded education as any other subject.  Extracurricular art education programs can be a vital first step to a well-rounded, highly educated child.
